Recently I read about Mayan Myths and Legends… and I was captured by the story about the magical hummingbird. This tiny, beautiful, speedy bird is believed by the ancient Mayans to actually be the sun in disguise, hoping to court a beautiful woman, who is actually the moon in disguise.
I’m not sure why this story was so cute to me, but I’ve always loved drawing hummingbirds and couldn’t resist depicting this story in my latest circle-portrait series! I placed hibiscus flowers in her hair because these flowers have come to symbolize young beauty, femininity, and are a favorite flower of the hummingbirds for their sweet nectar.
